Hot Sauce 101: A Fiery Introduction to Hot Sauce and Peppers!

Join Julie Singer of Julz’s Creations to learn about all things peppers and hot sauce!

Learn about different types of peppers and how the Scoville heat scale is used to measure the heat of peppers. Who are the people competing to eat the hottest peppers and sauces calling themselves Chile Heads?

How is hot sauce made shelf stable whether that be via acidification, heat or fermentation?

Learn about different types of hot sauces!

At the end of the presentation taste test different sauces and pickles if you dare!

Julie Singer grew up in Indiana where the spiciest elements to food were salt and pepper. But her mom did plant tomatoes every year, so she grew to appreciate the superior flavor and the satisfaction of growing your own.

Julie went on to get her PhD in Social Psychology with a concentration in improving the criminal justice system. After grad school she moved to Durham doing applied research. But she continued growing her own produce in her backyard.

She started growing hot peppers and quickly realized how easily they grow here. Soon she had pounds of hot peppers. She began making hot sauce and pickles for friends and family. After working in various institutions, she came to realize that the status quo and politics of life are not conducive to evidence-based changes. After much encouragement from friends and family, she took the plunge, went through all the paperwork, and formed Julz’s Creations, LLC in 2018. Now she manufactures award winning hot sauce, BBQ sauce, pickles, mustard, and Chicago style giardiniera.
