Do you love gardening, nature, and being outside? Children ages 7-12 are invited to join Southwest's Garden Club. Once a month, we'll get together in Southwest's backyard garden to talk about gardening, plant things, and work on garden tasks. Once we get into mid-summer, we'll also begin harvesting vegetables and herbs to taste and share. Seeds & seedlings will be available for participants to take home.

August is harvest month - we'll kick things off with a hybrid gardening/nutrition class! Join Durham's Innovative Nutrition Education (DINE) program for a three-class series on nutrition and cooking taught by licensed dietitians with experience working with preschool and elementary-aged students.

Each class will build upon itself, learning something new and applying skills that were learned in the previous class. Students will learn the concept of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables and identifying different plant parts we eat. Students will apply those concepts by planting microgreen seeds and learning how to harvest them at home. Students will create a dish by following a recipe and using various kitchen tools. Skills will be taught in class for each kitchen tool. The food prepared will then be enjoyed together as a class.

Available for ages 5-11 years old. Parents are welcomed to watch or enjoy the library. Please register every participant for each of the three classes. Please email any food allergies to Kristen at kstockdale@dconc.gov.

Let's grow together!
