Missy Elliott’s Black Feminist Worldmaking initiates a critical discussion of Black feminist visual performance across the music videos associated with the artist’s 1997 debut album. Known for her genre-defying lyrical and sonic performance, Missy Elliott’s relationship with the visually uncanny, humorous, and absurd distinguishes her from her peers. These videos gesture towards four concepts of Black feminist thought: Glitching, The Spectral, Rage, and Afrofuturism, providing insight into Elliott’s ability to create space for liberation, futurity, and self-actualization despite ongoing regimes of oppression.
