Alzheimer's Association Dementia and Caregiving Education Programs 

Join the Alzheimer's Association - Eastern North Carolina Chapter and Durham County Library for a year of informative programs designed to support and educate caregivers helping to provide them with the tools they need to successfully provide compassionate care for individuals living with dementia and themselves.

Please feel free to bring your lunch and covered beverage to enjoy during the programs. 

The programs are in room 3214 located on the third floor from 12 pm-1 pm at the Main Library located at 300 North Roxboro Street. 

Seating is limited and registration is appreciated, however feel free to drop in and seats should be available. Programs are free and will last about an hour. Choose to attend the programs most helpful to you! You do not need a Durham County Library card to register and attend the programs.

Parking is available in the library parking lot or at the North Queen Street Garage which is located at 115 North Queen Street which is directly across the street from the library behind the apartments. Parking is free in the garage. Please bring your parking ticket to a service point for validation.

January 16 - Healthy Living for your Brain and Body 

Provides science-based recommendations on how certain behaviors affect the brain and body and strategies for healthy decision-making in key areas.

February 20 -10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's 

Learn about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and the differences between normal aging and dementia and strategies for addressing concerns. 

March 20 - Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia 

Learn the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, causes, risk factors, stages, and treatments.

April 17 - Building Foundations of Caregiving

Focuses on helping the person living with dementia take part in daily activities, providing the right amount of support and balancing safety and independence while managing expectations. 

May 15 - Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia 

Learn the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, causes, risk factors, stages, and treatments

June 12 - Managing Money: A Caregiver's Guide to Finances 

Learn about the costs of caregiving and the benefits of early planning and how to avoid financial abuse and fraud; start a conversation about finances, assess legal and financial needs; and find support. 

July 17 - Exploring Care and Support Services 

Examines how best to prepare for future care decisions and changes including respite care, residential care, and end of life care.

August 21 - Dementia Conversations: Driving, Doctor Visits and Legal & Financial 

Offers tips on how to have conversations with family about the challenging and uncomfortable topics of going to the doctor, deciding when to stop driving, and making legal and financial plans.

September 18 - Healthy Living for your Brain and Body 

Provides science-based recommendations on how certain behaviors affect the brain and body and strategies for healthy decision-making in key areas.

October 16 - 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's 

Learn about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and the differences between normal aging and dementia and strategies for addressing concerns.

November 20 - Caregiving During the Holidays 

Understand what caregivers are facing during the holiday season, ways to support them, and strategies to adjust expectations and holiday plans. 

December 18 - Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors 

Details common behavior changes and how they are a form of communication, non-medical approaches to behaviors and recognizing when help is needed.
