Culture and politics can influence the way we think about plants. Sometimes, though, plants are so weird that they force us to reconsider our basic assumptions about the natural world. In this interactive talk, you'll learn about several plants that have “stumped” scientists simply by being themselves. Duke PhD candidate Anita Simha will show you how to look at plants with fresh eyes, stepping away from describing them in human terms and seeing the wonders of ecology more fully. Examining cultural biases also inspires a new look at traditions from other cultures and calls into question our notions of what is sufficiently important to record. From such a foundation, we can build a more holistic understanding of the plant world and of our place in nature. Join Durham County Library for an exciting exploration of this plant-based perspective in Main Libray's new auditorium!
